An important part of preschool and pre-kindergarten is learning about one’s own body. In fact, an important standard for children in social and emotional development is learning about their own special abilities and characteristics. Additionally, children at this age are learning how to control their larger muscles (gross motor skills) and the smaller muscles (fine motor skills). To help guide my daughter, I developed a ‘My Body lesson plan’ for intentional teaching moments. Being intentional during “lessons” for children allows them to explore their world and notice the little things around them.
Lesson Overview
The ‘My Body Lesson Plan’ includes a science or sensory activity, a math activity, a creative art activity, a language and literature activity, and a music and movement activity. Using this link to Canva, you can view my lesson plan overview and the individual activity plan for FREE! The individual activity plan includes the standard being addressed, the objective of the lesson, the materials you will need, and the procedure.
Sensory
Five Senses Nature Walk Bingo
Now, I understand our nature walk is vastly different from the nature walk others might experience. For this reason, I have included the bingo card template, which will take you to Canva, so you can edit the card to include things you might experience on your nature walks!
My Body Lesson Plan: Creative Arts
Body Art
This activity is easy to do and will make your child feel special. Danny walked downstairs while Evie and I were doing this activity. In her broken toddler English, she said “Look. I colors Evie”. She took great care in making sure everything was just right and each line went straight down.
When your child is doing the activity, encourage your child to think about their favorite clothing. What colors do they use? Why are they making that decision? Allow your child to express herself and reflect on what makes her special and unique.
Pro Tip: Have wider butcher paper. Evie was awfully squished on her little piece of paper!
My Body Lesson Plan: Math
Shape Boo-Boos
This activity focuses on a child’s ability to understand that shapes do not change with size or orientation. A square rotated 45 degrees is still a square. A small circle is as much of a circle as a large circle.

Reading Inside My Body: Learn what makes you work!
Reading with a child is so important! Experts say that reading with young children has increased scores in language skills and cognitive development. READ, READ, READ! This link is to the book on Amazon.
My Body Lesson Plan: Music and Movement
Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
You might think I’m crazy, but simple songs stick with children. Do you want a child to remember something? Make a song. Today my daughter started singing “pat-a-cake” while stirring a pretend cake batter. She plays with a toy car and sings “Wheels on the Bus”. Singing can promote many different skills!
