Musical Easter Egg Activity for Preschool

Confession time. I have difficulty throwing things away. I don’t know why, but I always say, “oh hey, I can use this later”. Truth be told, 95% of the time I will never use them again. However, it is the 5% that keeps me going. On days like today, while I am searching through piles of things (I refuse to say junk), I stumble upon something I wasn’t expecting. Today while pulling down a pile of fabrics from my closet, something smacked me right between the eyes: a plastic Easter egg! It was my ‘I told you so’ moment, it was the 5% that I live for! With those hidden gems, and the idea that literally smacked me on the head, I decided to create an Easter egg activity that would act like a preschool music matching activity!

Evie has reached that point where she lives for music! She loves the sounds and she’s got that leg popping action going on. We bought her a music kit that has rattles, bells, sticks, clappers, a tambourine and the storage case is also a drum. She LOVES it! Recently, I have noticed that she will search for a specific instrument for a specific song.  

So, I have a pile of plastic easter eggs and a child who loves music. What do I do? I create a toddler/preschool music activity! After I found these beautiful gems hiding in my closet, I raced downstairs to the panty. I grabbed dried pasta, rice, cereal, crumbled crackers and salt. With my different food items (I choose edible items just in case an egg opened Evie decided it was snack time), I loaded a different item into different eggs, just to test the sound. Each egg had its own unique sound. While some eggs had a distinctly different sound, others were a little more similar.  

Shake, Shake, Shake!

During this preschool music activity, I adjusted the concept a little bit to fit Evie’s needs. For toddlers, I stuck to one egg per item. Evie took the opportunity to examine each egg. She loved the different colors. Then she shook them. Her eyes lit up, as if she was saying ‘Mom, did you HEAR that’!  Unfortunately, it was at that moment that she also learned how to open the eggs…so much rice! To be fair, she did help me clean it up. 

With Easter so close, I wanted to create an easy, fun, at-home activity that anyone can do with those extra Easter eggs laying around. This Easter egg activity is simple to do and can be modified for different age groups. 

Here is How the Musical Easter Egg Activity Works: 

1. Gather Your Materials.  

Some materials that you can use for egg fillers: rice, dried pasta, chocolate chips, marshmallows, cereal, sugar, beads, pebbles, sticks, pom poms, coins, nuts, anything small works! In addition to these materials, you will also need fillable plastic easter eggs for this preschool music activity. I also recommend grabbing some tape. Otherwise, your toddler music activity will turn into a toddler sensory activity. 

2. Fill the Eggs 

For this activity, I encourage you to try to find items with different textures and of different sizes. This will help create different sounds when your child shakes the eggs. 

3. Seal the Eggs 

This step is optional. But again, if your eggs pop open easily, you may end up with an investigative sensory activity instead. 

4. SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE! 

DANCE PARTY! This is the step that can be different for different age groups.  

Musical Easter Egg Activity Age Adjustments

For my 18 month old, she just enjoyed shaking the eggs and hearing the different sounds. She would pick one up and give it a shake. Afterwards, she would try a different egg and give that one a shake. Describe the different sounds. Do they sound similar or different? Are they loud or quiet? Which noise does your child gravitate towards? 

As your child gets older, you can vary the complexity of the activity. One of my favorite parts of this activity is the matching element that you can introduce. Do you remember the matching card game, the one that tests your memory? Do it with your eggs. Fill two eggs with the same filling and test your child to see if they can spot the difference! For an easier version, you can put the same filling in the same color egg. For a more difficult version, you can use fillers that sound very similar. This will challenge your child to listen closely and spot the differences. 

 This preschool music activity encourages your child to explore the sounds around them! For those children, like mine, that love music, this easter egg activity is a perfect way to use those extra eggs that are laying around!
