playing with leprechaun sand

With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, you are on the hunt for GREEN activities! This sensory bin combines 2 EASY ingredients for hours of fun! Leprechaun Sand is a green ‘sand’ like texture, but it won’t stain your child’s hands from food coloring!

What Is Leprechaun Sand?

Leprechaun sand is a homemade ‘kinetic sand’ that can be molded and squished together. It will retain its shape and is great for stamping shapes into! What I love the most about this activity is that I can work in educational elements into this activity to help Evie learn about shapes and letters!

You Only Need 2 Ingredients for this Sensory Bin

  • Baking Soda
  • Aloe gel
leprechaun sand stuff

That’s IT! It is so EASY. I experimented with ratios so you don’t have to and here is what I have found:

1:1

This ratio was one part baking soda to one part aloe gel. The texture of the leprechaun sand was gooey. It was a little more wet than I had desired. The leprechaun sand would stick together and still feel wet. While it could be molded, it would cling to hands. It wasn’t really what I was looking for.

2:1

This ratio was two parts baking soda to one part aloe gel. This was the ratio I ended up using for my leprechaun sand. The texture was closer to that of ‘kinetic sand’. It would still be moldable but if you wanted it would crumble. Sometimes with ‘kinetic sand’ textures, I find it is more difficult to stamp into it. I did not have that problem with this sensory bin. This was a perfect texture for stamping! The best part was that it was noticeably green! It also had an interesting smell. It almost smelt like aloe, but it didn’t at the same time.

3:1

This ration was three parts baking soda to one part aloe gel. This ration reminded me of a crumbly cookie. It didn’t really hold its shape and it wasn’t really green. It was a pale green at best.

My attempts to create an AMAZING St. Patrick’s Day sensory bin was foiled by my late shopping trip. Apparently I need to be a better planner and buy things well before a week in advance. Oops. Thankfully Amazon does two day delivery with prime! Mine added items might get here in time for Evie and I to do this activity again!
